"Listen, there are people that are coming down the pilot ladder of the prow. You go up that pilot ladder, get on that ship and tell me how many people are still on board. And what they need. Is that clear? You need to tell me if there are children, women or people in need of assistance. And tell me the exact number of each of these categories. Is that clear? Listen Schettino, that you saved yourself from the sea, but I am going to... I'm going to make sure you get in trouble. ...I am going to make you pay for this. Go on board."
Captain Gregorio De Falco

bullet Charlotte Church waived 100k pounds fee at Murdoch's wedding for good press corner

Charlotte Church revealed that she gave up a 100,000-pound fee in exchange for a favourable publicity, when she was asked to sing at Rupert Murdoch's wedding at the age of 13.

The 25-year-old Welsh star told the Leveson Inquiry that she was asked to sing at Murdoch's wedding to Wendi Deng in 1999.

The opera singer said in a statement that she was offered the six-figure fee, but was told if she waived it, she would be looked upon favourably by Murdoch's papers.

The inquiry heard News International denied the offer was made.

"I remember being told that Rupert Murdoch had asked me to sing at his wedding to Wendi Deng and it would take place on his yacht in New York," the Telegraph quoted Church as saying.

"I remember being told that the offer of money or the offer of the favour, in order to basically get good press, to be looked upon favourably.

"And I also remember being 13 and thinking, 'why on earth would anybody take a favour over 100,000 pounds?'"

She said that she and her mother were both quite "resolute" about accepting the money, but were urged by her management and figures from the record company into taking the option of the favour from a "powerful man" like Murdoch. (ANI)

bullet Charlotte Star corner
The Charlotte Star is essentially a local Charlotte newspaper, but with a national and international perspective, designed to provide readers with a one-stop shop for Charlotte, national US, regional, and world news coverage, weather and sports information, with live updates on breaking business stories, and what's happening in the financial markets.

The biggest advantage we have is that we are an online newspaper, which means we are constantly refreshing our stories as more and more information comes to hand. Often when a story breaks the initial details are sketchy.

We and our sources around the world work hard to gather more information, verify facts, and provide a perspective of the major stories. Expert opinion often accompanies our articles to better inform readers, and provide a more complete understanding
of the news we deliver.

Financial markets and business reports are regular features as we pin down what's happening, and constantly refresh stock market indice readings, dollar currency rates, and breaking business news reports. Our world sports coverage is a priority, as is our regional news.

We like to think if you're looking for breaking news out of Charlotte, North Carolina, the United States, or the world, you'll look for it first at the Charlotte Star.
