Having adequate mechanical tools in the workshop is necessary if you want to be good at your job. You can't afford to dissatisfy a customer because then he will just ditch your store and go to your competitor.
Can you imagine how bad that will be for your business?
That's why you should have the essential metalworking tools in your workshop to fix the mechanical stuff people break or spoil somehow.
From Greek philosophers' explanation of the mechanism behind a wheel and axle to Archimedes description of the pulley and lever-mankind have come a long way. They have developed some efficient metalworking tools that you must own in your workshop:
Didn't your grandfather use to have a handsaw in his workshop?
We bet he did.
But, do you know why?
That's because it is one of the essential tools to include in your workshop. You never know when you'll have to shorten a wooden plank or cut a damaged tree branch, which is why a handsaw is essential in a workshop.
There are two types of handsaws such as:
Unlike the power tools, choosing a handsaw is more challenging. First, you have to select a tool that feels comfortable and balanced in your hand. Next, you must choose a handsaw with even sharp teeth stuck into a blade with a straight arrow and tapered at the end.
Utility knives may be one of the cheapest yet most effective tools to add to your workshop. They cost approximately $5-$15, and they are also user-friendly.
You can use this pint-sized knife in various workshop tasks such as breaking cardboard boxes, trimming carpets, splicing cords, cutting drywall, and so on.
You will find two types of utility knives such as
(1) Retractable utility knife,
(2) Non-retractable utility knife.
We suggest you always go for a retractable utility knife because storing a razor-sharp utility knife openly is simply a bad idea.
Retractable knives have snap-off blade segments, which is another plus. Once the thin side worms out, just snap them off, and get a new knife to work with.
We think it goes without saying why you need a screwdriver in your workshop. However, choosing the right one may not be easy as you have to focus on its tip and grip.
A flathead screwdriver is a master horse that will accomplish all the tasks you need it to do. It can fit the traditional screws with a single linear depression. Even the wedge-styled tip makes the screwdriver easy to pry or scrape.
On the other hand, a Phillips-head screwdriver has a cross-shaped metal tip that works well with any cross-shaped depression in screws.
Enough about the tip!!
You also need to choose a screwdriver with a tight, cushioned yet flexible grip. If the grip is smooth, you can easily torque tight the screws.
Without a wrench in your workshop, you can't do one of the most basic mechanical jobs: tightening nuts and bolts.
There are several kinds of wrenches available in the market. However, some of the most popular ones are;
Crescent wrenches are unique and adjustable. If you turn the handle in one of the dials, the other side expands or contracts. Thus, a user can adjust the wrench into the right size without having wrenches of different sizes.
On the other hand, a pipe wrench is essentially good for plumbing jobs because it tightens and loosens the pipes. Even the top serrated jaw can be adjusted up and down to fit the right-sized pipe.
No matter how advanced we have become in terms of workshop jobs, a well-oiled hammer is a must for every mechanic. Choosing the anti-vibration hammer may be a good choice because the tuning fork hidden inside the padded handle is known to reduce vibration.
It means, when you hammer a nail on the wall, the person sitting next to that wall won't feel any disturbance.
Cool, right?
This makes your entire effort of choosing the right hammer pretty easy. However, even if you don't select this hammer, make sure you choose one with a softened face.
Thus, you will ensure that the hammer does not leave any mark on the surface.
We have talked about the essential mechanical tools that you can include in a workshop in this article. However, studying these tools thoroughly will see how effective they are and how easy they make the toughest mechanical jobs.
